An defence official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and staff have been instructed to avoid discussing secret information in any vehicles.
Security Advice for MoD Personnel
During a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made cars.
He said that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.
Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any car, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Defence Background
This announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The broader security situation underscores the significance of robust measures and caution in all aspects of government activities, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
