The feeling at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?
Had their campaign unraveling, or was there ever a binding element holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, before he admitted that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that his departure was imminent were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if progress is being made or imploding.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback
A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.
Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Finding His True Position
It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the nature of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
